It supports bit error rate testing (BERT) applications and is used to emulate fibre loss for system dynamics testing.

The OLA-55 features the SMARTWheel for precise manual attenuation adjustment, the SMARTStar graphical user interface for intuitive operation, and the SMARTEnergy power management system delivering over 1000 hours of battery life. Measurements are traceable to NIST/PTB standards, and the instrument is built to withstand demanding field environments with a shock-proof, splash-proof enclosure. A USB port enables remote operation.
