The Viavi (formerly JDSU) OCC-56 is part of the SmartClass OCC-55/-56 Optical Channel Checker family — a compact, lightweight, and cost-effective field test solution for the installation, maintenance, and upgrade of DWDM networks. It functions as a selective power meter that scans DWDM channels according to the ITU-T wavelength grid, automatically recording wavelength, frequency, and associated power levels, making it a practical alternative to a full optical spectrum analyser (OSA) in applications where OSNR measurement is not required.

The OCC-56L variant is optimised for L-band operation (1570–1609 nm), complementing the standard C-band OCC-56 for extended wavelength range DWDM deployments.
