For in-service fibre monitoring with ONMSi, OTU-8000, and OTU-5000 platforms. These passive components enable OTDR testing of fibres carrying live traffic by inserting an out-of-band wavelength (1625 or 1650 nm) into the transmission path. The OTDR signal is combined with the data signal using a wavelength division multiplexer (WDM). At the far end, an optional filter can block the OTDR signal where the transmission equipment does not provide adequate isolation.

When an OTDR measurement range can cover more than one fibre span, a bypass can extend the OTDR signal to an adjacent span, increasing monitoring distance and reducing the need for additional Optical Test Units (OTU-8000 or OTU-5000).
