The Viavi (formerly JDSU) 81162C is a 1625 nm in-service filtered OTDR module designed for use with compatible Viavi platform units including the OTU-8000E. The 1625 nm wavelength is specifically chosen for in-service testing, as it falls outside the standard C and L transmission bands, allowing network operators to test live fibres without interrupting traffic or requiring service outages.

The module incorporates an optical filter to block transmitted signal wavelengths, ensuring accurate OTDR traces are captured even on active fibres. Its high dynamic range and short dead zones make it effective for fault location, splice and connector loss measurement, and end-to-end characterisation on metro and long-haul singlemode infrastructure.
