The Intec Argus 166 (later supported under JDSU / Viavi Solutions) is a high-performance handheld multiservice access tester designed for professional broadband and telecoms network engineers. It is one of the most comprehensively equipped instruments in the Argus family, combining DSL, ISDN, POTS, IP, and copper qualification testing into a single rugged portable platform.

The Argus 166 supports the full range of xDSL technologies including ADSL Annex B and J, VDSL, and SHDSL in 2, 4, 6, and 8-wire configurations, as well as SHDSL.bis variants. ISDN testing covers BRI S/T (TE and NT modes), BRI U, S/T monitoring, and PRI, with BERT testing at both MegaBERT and 128kBERT levels. IP-layer testing includes RFC2544 throughput benchmarking, VoIP quality analysis, HTTP download, FTP up/download, ping, and TR-069 remote management testing.

Copper qualification tools include a built-in TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) for fault location, Line Scope for waveform analysis, and Copper Box functionality. A GigE SFP interface enables fibre and optical Ethernet testing.

The modular software licensing architecture allows individual test capabilities to be activated as required, making the Argus 166 highly flexible across installation, commissioning, fault-finding, and service verification workflows.
