The Halo Labs HORIZON® (P/N 10-0001) is the industry's first system designed specifically to address the demand for quantitative subvisible particle analysis at every stage of biologic drug formulation. Powered by Backgrounded Membrane Imaging (BMI) technology, the HORIZON enables low-volume, high-throughput subvisible particle characterisation from early lead optimisation and pre-formulation through to late-stage development.

The system captures a background image of the membrane before vacuum filtration, then re-images the same membrane with captured particles. The background is precisely aligned and subtracted pixel-by-pixel to eliminate membrane texture, delivering high-contrast particle images with strong reproducibility and minimal interference from membrane imperfections. Contrast is reported to be 10x greater than measurements performed in liquid, and sizes are calibrated using an electron microscope.

The HORIZON is a fully automated, fluidics-free system using disposable 96-well membrane plates. With walk-away automation, it can screen up to 96 formulation samples in under 2 hours. Results are delivered with CVs consistently below 8% for polydisperse samples. The system is insensitive to the refractive index of the solution, enabling reliable measurement of translucent protein aggregates that are missed by light obscuration and flow imaging methods.

VUE (ParticleVue) software provides automated particle characterisation outputs including Equivalent Circular Diameter (ECD), aspect ratio, circularity, and particle count. Interactive scatter plots and histograms support rapid visualisation of size distribution and key statistics. Individual particle images can be reviewed directly within the software.

Note: ParticleVue software v3.0 or newer is not supported on the HORIZON instrument.
