This Keysight N4916B de-emphasis signal converter is supplied with Option STD and Option 001 (clock multiplier) active. The Option 001 clock multiplier enables error counting and jitter/eye analysis of devices using half-rate clocking when used with the J-BERT N4903B analyser.

The Keysight (formerly Agilent) N4916B is a 4-tap de-emphasis signal converter with an optional clock multiplier, designed to accurately characterise multi-gigabit serial interfaces. It enables R&D and test engineers to emulate transmitter de-emphasis with adjustable levels across one pre-cursor and two post-cursors, while remaining fully transparent to jitter even on non-balanced pattern streams.

The de-emphasis technique compensates for signal degradations that occur when transmitting high-speed electrical signals over PCB traces, backplanes, or cables. As data rates move beyond 5 Gb/s, multi-tap FIR de-emphasis becomes essential for interfaces such as PCI Express 3.0, SATA, USB 3, QPI, 12G SAS, and IEEE 802.3 backplanes (10GBASE-KR, 40GBASE-KR4).

The N4916B can operate as a front end for the J-BERT N4903B, ParBERT 81250A, or other gigabit pattern generators. It can also be used to de-embed signal degradations caused by cables, fixtures, or test boards for more precise receiver tolerance characterisation. Control is available via USB from the J-BERT N4903B GUI or from a standalone user interface with programming examples provided.

The clock multiplier (Option 001) generates a full-rate external clock from a half-rate input clock, allowing the J-BERT N4903B analyser to perform error, eye, and jitter analysis on devices that use half-rate clocking without requiring a CDR.
